Sumac Elementary offers tour of kindergarden program

Sumac Elementary School will offer tours of its Extended Day Kindergarten Program for interested parents on Tues., Feb. 8 and 15 and on Thurs., March 3 and Tues., March 8. Tours will be presented from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. at the school, 6050 N. Calmfield Ave., Agoura Hills.

These tours will permit parents of prospective students to accompany Sumac’s principal, Karen Hansen, on a tour of Sumac’s recently renovated campus. Parents will have the opportunity to visit kindergarten classrooms and observe the kindergarten teachers instructing their current students.

At the tour’s conclusion, Hansen will field questions from the parents.

For the past two school years Sumac has offered an Extended Day Kindergarten Program for incoming kindergarten students. In this program, kindergarten students arrive for class at 8:05 a.m. and are dismissed at 1:05 p.m.

According to Hansen, teachers and parents alike have observed that an extended day at school allows kids to cover California’s State Academic Standards while at the same time developing social skills and engaging in creative, imaginative play.

Sumac’s kindergarten students also participate in weekly sessions of music, computer and physical education classes taught by specialists. After-school care is available through the YMCA on Sumac’s campus.

Kindergarten registration will be from 9 to 11 a.m. and from 1 to 3 p.m. Tues., April 5 at the school site.

To participate in a tour or for more information, call the school office at (818) 991-4940.
