Students concerned about U.S. Patriot Act Students concerned about U.S. Patriot Act We, the undersigned, are students at Agoura High School. We wish to inform the public—without offending The Acorn’s readership—of what the Patriot Act means to each and every one of us. To begin with, the Patriot Act is a law. The Attorney General oversees operations while the Federal Bureau of Investigation personally arrests culprits and warns the public. Understand that this measure of power can be easily corrupted, and in the process, can become an unconstitutional application of governmental authority. For example, the FBI can gather information with a warrant and inform the culprit afterwards. Even religious services can be monitored. We are concerned that any lawsuit is considered illegal if it questions the scope of the Patriot Act. The Patriot Act seems unreasonable if it allows biased law enforcement to monitor the general population. Our solution for this nuisance is for the Supreme Court to read the Patriot Act thoroughly and strive to comprehend every single word and detail. If the act were to be declared unconstitutional, the power of local authorities would be diminished. Jonathan Rex Bartuzik, Andrew Stipkovich, Brian Obst Agoura High School |
