Mass honors tsunami victims

Cardinal Roger Mahony celebrated a special mass for victims and survivors of the South Asia tsunami at 12:30 p.m. Sat., Jan. 15 at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels, 555 W. Temple St., Los Angeles.

Indonesian dancers performed in the Cathedral prior to the start of the Mass. The Counsels General of the affected nations and other local and statewide dignitaries attended.

The mass was coordinated by the Indonesian Catholic community of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles and included readings and prayers in the native languages of the countries impacted by the tragedy.

In addition, Indonesian, Filipino and Thai cantors joined the Cathedral Choir to sing the hymns during the Mass, which also included some traditional Indonesian hymns.
