Newbury park workshop features cultural crafts

Artist Michael Williams will lead a cultural craft workshop teaching participants how to make dream catchers or prayer sticks with beads, feathers and other materials in a two-session event on Sun., Jan. 30 at Rancho Sierra Vista/Satwiwa in Newbury Park. The first session will be presented from 10 a.m. to noon with another session from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m.

Williams’ works have their origins in the Wichita culture. The Wichita called themselves Kitkiti’sh, meaning "raccoon eyes," because the intricate tattoos designed around men’s eyes resembled the eyes of a raccoon. The elaborate work of Williams’ ancestors is reflected in his own art.

Admission and parking are free. For reservations call (805) 375-1930. Further information including directions to the Rancho Sierra Vista/Satwiwa site in the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area is available by calling the National Park Service at (805) 370-2301.
