     I read that how civilized a society is can be measured by how it treats it dead. Well, we really seem to care for our dead. We may not care quite as much when they’re living—but let them die and the sky’s the limit.

     Once upon a time my city-bred brother came on a hike with me to a waterfall. It was a short trek from the Backbone Trailhead on Kanan Road at Newton Canyon (just before Tunnel T-1), about a mile south of Kanan’s junction with Mulholland.
