Local artist to be showcased on HGTV

The work of pop artist Nelson De La Nuez, who has a studio in Simi Valley, will be showcased at 9:30 p.m. Sat., Dec. 18 on HGTV’s "Designer’s Challenge." The inspiration for this episode originated with Thousand Oaks resident Elisa Bell Geddes, who wanted to redecorate her master bedroom and bath around two brightly colored canvases created by De La Nuez. The TV show, taped previously, interviews the artist at his home and shows many samples of his work as well the transformation of Bell Geddes’ master suite.

De La Nuez specializes in pop art that captures images representing American history, media, culture and traditions such as Elvis, Marilyn Monroe, Bob’s Big Boy, Tony the Tiger and more. "To many, they (the images) are strong connections to childhood youth and family—all that is good and right with the world," the artist said. "The images I use are thought of as our heroes, idols and icons. They are all youthful creative expressions that define our society and our individuality. It would be sad if the future—our children’s future—did not recognize these images."

In describing why she has bought a number of De La Nuez’s pieces, Bell Geddes said, "My whole house is fun and bright, but the master bedroom was white and boring, so De La Nuez’s art inspired me to create a fun, childlike atmosphere in it. The room has now come to life."

De La Nuez’s work is currently shown and sold at many galleries worldwide.
