Westminster Presbyterian Church in Westlake Village will transform its campus into the ancient village of Bethlehem this weekend, inviting visitors to take a trip back in time to the day Christ was born.
Church members, dressed in period costume, will roam the grounds in character as citizens of that time, portraying Roman soldiers guarding the newly erected gate to the city, and as Magi waiting to visit the king. Children will lead their goats and sheep through the streets, selling them for a handful of "denari" (the money of that time), and a circle of women will dance to traditional music.
This is the ninth year that Westminster is presenting this authentic environmental theater, and some 3,000 visitors are expected.
Visitors to Bethlehem never leave their cars but move slowly around the church grounds with their windows rolled down to hear the dialogue of the ancient city.
"This is our gift to the community," said Rev. Dick Thompson, who brought the idea of Bethlehem to the congregation. "It helps families teach their kids what Christmas is about. So simple and low- tech. The adults walk out of the business world, put on a bed sheet and sit by a fire."
At any given time there are about 100 cast members on the set, but 300 to 350 people participate over the course of the weekend. For many, it’s as dear a Christmas tradition as decorating the tree or singing cherished carols.
The weekend before the event the congregation builds the sets. This year, 85 people assisted in erecting the ancient city.
"Many of our kids have grown up with Bethlehem each year," Rev. Thompson said. "I’ve seen friendships start here. People working together side-by-side. It has become a very meaningful event for everyone involved."
At dusk, Bethlehem comes to life. Her inhabitants slip on robes and shawls over their blue jeans and sneakers and take their places in the city. The gates are opened and Bethlehem’s modern visitors are welcomed.
Visit Bethlehem from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. Sat. and Sun., Dec. 11 and 12 at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 32111 Watergate Road, Westlake Village.
