Other local football matchups

Hart (1-1) vs.

Westlake (1-1)

Last week’s results: Westlake suffered a 41-6 beating at the hands of Notre Dame. Hart was knocked off by St. Bonaventure in a shootout, 38-29.

Outlook: After an unsettling loss in their home opener, the Warriors get just four days to prepare for Hart, another defending CIF-champion ranked in the Southern Section’s top 20 that knows how to score.

Though starting QB Tyler Lyon is averaging almost 300 yards a game passing, last week’s loss to St. Bonaventure showed that the Hart offense is susceptible to a strong defensive line—which Westlake has. The Warriors and QB Ryan Campbell will need to cut down on the turnovers if they want to escape non-league play with a winning record. Last year Westlake prevailed in Newhall in dramatic fashion, 25-24.

Mojave (2-0) vs.

Oak Park (2-0)

Last week’s results: The Eagles continued to impress, winning easily at home, 35-14, over Calabasas. Mojave crushed Vasquez, 56-0.

Outlook: After cruising through their first two non-league contests, the Eagles should get a fight from the visiting Mojave Mustangs, a team that won its first two games by an average of 42 points.

Oak Park will by anchored by its talented defensive front, which will be expected to shut down a determined Mojave run-attack that accumulated 365 yards in last week’s dominating victory. The Eagle offense, as always, should feature a good balance of the pass and run, but QB Sean Sammis ought to look for WR Gavin Ketchum often. The senior has 18 catches for 236 yards and five touchdowns.
