Says duck feeding not the cause of dirty water Says duck feeding not the cause of dirty water This weekend, a flyer was distributed around Lake Lindero asking residents not to feed the ducks. Although it was never stated explicitly, the anonymous writer’s chief concern appears to be the pea-soup appearance of the water and the dirty sidewalks. As a 24-year lakeside resident, I can attest that the poor water clarity is not due to the ducks. We have had crystal clear water even at times when one lakeside resident was spreading 50-pound bags of duck feed on the sidewalk once a week. Allowing pondweed to grow, and then harvesting it, as was done in the past, results in very clear water. However, it is much more expensive than the current method of pre-emergent weed poisoning. We had clean sidewalks previously too; again it was a management decision to cut sidewalk cleaning from a twice-weekly scrub to a once-every-three-weeks treatment with a leaf blower. If our anonymous complainer really wants clear water and clean sidewalks, he or she must bring it up with the homeowners association and demand that the lake and environs be maintained at an acceptable level.
