Parent workshop offered by police department

Classes teach parents how to intervene

The Camarillo Police Department is offering a comprehensive 10-week parent workshop that will get underway at 6 p.m. Wed., Sept. 29 at the police department, 3701 E. Las Posas Road, Camarillo. Classes will meet weekly and are free; however, a workbook is required at a cost of $22.

Created in 1988, Parent Project is specifically aimed to help parents intervene in the most destructive of adolescent behaviors. This "comprehensive, award-winning program offers practical, no-nonsense solutions to the critical issues parent face today."

Parent Project was designed to supply what research indicates are the three things parents need to change destructive behavior: desire, specific information and skills, and emotional and practical support.

The goal of the workshop is to improve a child’s school performance, reduce family conflict and intervene in a child’s drug use and truancy. The workshop utilizes an activity-based skills curriculum to assist parents in identifying problems, creating a plan and motivating their children to change their destructive behavior.
