Dogs taught to avoid rattlers

Patrick Callaghan will present his Rattlesnake Avoidance Workshop for Canines from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sat., July 17 and Sun., July 18 at Headwaters Corner, Calabasas. Attendees are asked to park at 23075 Mulholland Hwy., near the intersection with Old Topanga Canyon Road.

Sponsored by the National Disaster Search Dog Foundation and Mountains Restoration Trust, the workshop is described as "safe and humane," and pet owners are advised to allow a half hour for each dog’s training session. A nominal fee and reservations are required and can be made by calling (818) 225-9025.

Callaghan has more than 30 years’ experience in this line of work. The goal of his workshop is "to teach your dog to avoid rattlesnakes and to warn you when one is in the area."
