It debuts tomorrow night.

Malibu Stage Company will present Warren Leight’s 1999 Tony Award-winning play, "Side Man," from June 4 through July 18 at 29243 Pacific Coast Hwy., Malibu.

Covering a span of time from 1953 to 1985, this "lovely and poignant" play, filled with music and "brilliant trumpet solos," unfolds through the eyes of Clifford, the only son of Gene, a jazz trumpet player, and Terry, an alcoholic mother. Their marriage slowly dissolves and young Clifford bears witness to it.

As an adult Clifford visits Gene in a rundown jazz club after years of separation, where he requests that his father play his mother’s favorite song, the old standard "Why Was I Born?"

Ellen Greene stars as Terry. The Broadway actress earned a Tony nomination for her performance in "The Threepenny Opera" opposite the late Raul Julia at the Vivian Beaumont Theatre in Lincoln Center.

Other cast members include Jack Conley, Eddie Kehler, David Barry Gray, Todd Truly, Mary Lou Metzger and John Mariano.

The play is directed by Christopher Hart.

"Side Man" is presented at 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, 3 p.m. Sundays. Tickets are $25. For reservations, call (310) 589-1998.
