Get free tax assistance

While the Franchise Tax Board (FTB) has announced that field offices will be closed due to budget reductions, it’s encouraging taxpayers who need help with their tax returns to call the toll-free phone number or use FTB’s Website.

"Californians can find a range of e-services on our Website," said state Controller and FTB Chairman Steve Westly. "Tax help is just a click or phone call away."

For taxpayers using the paper filing method, the most commonly used tax forms will be available in all field office lobbies. In offices where the public counter is closed, public telephones connecting directly to the service center will be provided.

The 10 field office closures will include Ventura, but five offices in the most densely populated areas of the state, such as Los Angeles, will remain open.

Assistance is also available at Volunteer Income Tax Assistance and Tax Counseling for the Elderly, which offers free tax help to those in low-income, senior and disabled categories.
