Shomrei Torah welcomes Rabbinic intern from Uganda

Rabbi Gershom SizomuRabbi Gershom Sizomu

Shomrei Torah Synagogue (STS) of West Hills recently announced that Rabbi Gershom Sizomu, spiritual leader of the Abayudaya—the Jewish community of Uganda—has been serving as a rabbinic intern at STS since August, and will continue with the congregation through the end of the academic year and into the following year.

The Sizomu family came to Los Angeles so that Rabbi Sizomu could obtain formal rabbinic training at the University of Judaism, a program that will entail five years of study.

He’ll lead Shabbat services at 6 p.m. Fridays, Jan. 9, Feb. 14, March 12, April 9, May 14 and June 11. These services will be observed in the style of the Abayudaya, including traditional Abayudayan melodies sung in Sizomu’s village.

"Gershom brings such warmth and knowledge to us, and we are excited to assist in his training," said Rabbi Richard P. Camras, spiritual leader of STS.

Shomrei Torah Synagogue, a conservative Jewish congregation, is at 7353 Valley Circle Blvd., West Hills. Reach them at (818) 346-0811.
