Chargers to host playoff game after beating Coyotes

The Agoura football team, which ended the regular season 9-1 overall and 6-1 in league, will host Dos Pueblos, the third-place finisher of the Channel League, in the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) Southern Section Division IV playoff opener at 7:30 tomorrow night.

"We looked at them on film this afternoon," said Charger head coach Charlie Wegher on Sunday night. "They’ve got an excellent quarterback, some really good receivers and some solid players on defense."

Dos Pueblos is 5-3-2 on the season. Kellen Moriarty is their quarterback.

"They’re balanced," Wegher said regarding Dos Pueblos’ ability to run or throw. Of Moriarty Wegher added, "Their quarterback can run, he’s very athletic, he throws the ball well and everybody I’ve talked to said they’ve got some good receivers. You’ve got to be on your game (defensively)."

If Agoura does win, the Chargers will likely play another home game next Friday, having won a coin flip that would send San Luis Obispo to Agoura, provided SLO wins its first-round game against North Torrance.

Agoura beat Calabasas, 49-21, in the regular season finale last Friday to secure second place in the Marmonte League behind Westlake (7-0). Moorpark (5-3) finished in third place. The win over the Coyotes allowed the Chargers to get their subs into the game.

"We were able to play a lot of kids," Wegher said. "I thought we had a good outing and kept our momentum for the playoffs."

Defense will be the key in the playoffs, said Wegher.

"That’s been our philosophy all year—play great defense and be physical," said Wegher. "And give the offense a chance to win without having to score 45 points."

The coach said his team is ready for the playoffs.

"The kids are excited," Wegher said. "They’ve worked hard and they realize our goal is at hand. We obviously want to play in that last (championship) game and that’s four weeks away."
