Kingsmen Shakespeare Co. gets grant

The Kingsmen Shakespeare Company has announced it is the recipient of a $4,000 grant from Target Corporation to be used for its Shakespeare Educational Tour (SET) program.

The SET program, a joint project of the Kingsmen Shakespeare Company and the Thousand Oaks Arts Commission, began four years ago by bringing workshops and performances to Conejo Valley Unified School District elementary students in grades four, five and six.

Two years ago, the program expanded to bring Shakespeare to even younger elementary school children. In preparation for the workshops, teachers teach their students about Shakespeare, his works and Elizabethan England. The workshops serve as a tool for teaching rhyme, symbolism and the universality of Shakespeare.

"At Target Corporation we feel it is not only our responsibility to give back to the community, we feel it is our privilege," said Laysha Ward, vice president of community relations.

"The Kingsmen Shakespeare Company is doing incredible things to help strengthen our communities," Ward said.
