Newcomers need know that coyotes will also attack and devour family pets Newcomers need know that coyotes will also attack and devour family pets I read, with interest, the letter by Mr. Raser (The Acorn, Oct. 9) regarding the "cute photo" of Mesa, the coyote. I must admit to ambivalent emotions about these predators, having lost two beloved cats over the past four years to their hunting instincts. Although, admittedly, the "escapee" cats were not small children, they were just as much part of our family. I also believe that we have forced the coyotes out as we continue to destroy their natural habitat. My concern is over the numbers of people who move to this area, believing it is safe—as it was in the cities from whence they came—to allow their small pets to go outside unattended in the mornings and/or evenings—the killers’ happiest hunting hours. I have even noted one small dog chained to the patio of a nearby apartment—perfect "bait" and completely helpless. These pets, just like our children, depend on us for their safety. In the almost 40 years we have lived in Calabasas, the coyotes have become ever more bold. This past summer, I "met" one in my backyard, not more that 10 minutes after I had retrieved the fallen plums and taken my (old and blind) dog back indoors. Please know, neighbors, that if you choose to allow your pets to roam free, or leave small children unattended, they are perfect targets for the coyotes in the food chain. F. M. Cochrane Calabasas |
