Keeping it clean

Have you noticed the sudden lack of litter along Kanan Road? That’s because recently the Cornell Preservation Organization (CPO) held its fourth annual Medea Creek Cleanup in cooperation with the National Parks and Heal the Bay. Almost 100 volunteers showed up at two locations.

We estimate that over the years we have taken at least 20 tons of litter and debris from the creek and the area surrounding Kanan, Roadside, Cornell and Agoura roads. Every year community support for this effort has grown and we would like to thank our very generous benefactors. From the beginning Mel Adams and Agoura Equipment Rentals have provided essential support as have the Do-It Center and Roadside Lumber. This year they were joined by Albertsons-Westlake, Costco, Gelsons, the J. H. Snyder Company, Kinko’s-Agoura Hills, Ralphs, Starbucks and Vons. L.A. County Road Maintenance and County Fire Station No. 65 also helped out. The city of Agoura Hills donated materials. Mayor Pro Tem Dan Kuperberg showed up with his family, and city council candidate Steve Rishoff went to work with his very cool green tractor.

Getting "down and dirty" this way turns out to be a very popular and downright inspiring way to spend a Saturday morning. Every year as we work we have been cheered on by friendly honks and waves from passersby. And seeing what a difference a little dedicated effort can make shows that clean waterways and a litter-free environment are very possible dreams.
