Children need civics lessons When I attended the University of Alabama, I had a black roommate. However, I can remember George Wallace on TV standing in the door on campus to prevent black students from being admitted. Back then they said it wasn’t discrimination because they had "Separate but Equal." This stunt played well in Alabama and ensured Wallace’s political success. Now we have Judge Moore standing in the courthouse door. He displayed the Protestant version of the Ten Commandments. He doesn’t care that Jews, Catholics and Muslims have different versions of the Commandments. Moore ignores the fact that the First Commandment says you can only worship Yahweh and the First Amendment of the Constitution he swore to support says any religion, no religion or any god is acceptable and equal under the law. He should now have a great political career, but that doesn’t make it right. Maybe Alabama will create a separate court system for evangelical Protestant Christians only. His monument clearly said to Jews, Catholics, Muslims, Buddhists, non-Christians, atheist citizens and others that they should not expect justice in Moore’s Court. Funny, I don’t think he would support these groups being exempted from taxes. It should be stated that in your private life you have a right to select both your friends and your belief systems. The public (all citizens equal) arena, however, is different. Americans should have learned this in civics class, but I am surprised that many school districts no longer teach civics. It appears the Men in Black Robes can use California’s support right now. John Gibson Westlake Village |
