Come celebrate the West at Autry Museum this fall From October through December, the Autry Museum of Western Heritage will offer activities for families that celebrate the rich and diverse cultural traditions of the American West. Unless otherwise noted, all activities are free with paid museum admission. The Autry is at 4700 Western Heritage Way, across from the L.A. Zoo in Griffith Park, Los Angeles. From 1 to 3:30 p.m. Sat., Oct. 4 in Heritage Court, families are invited to come "Make Your Own Pot!" and discover how pots are made in the book "The Pot That Juan Built" by Nancy Andrews-Goebel. Participants will explore the exhibition "California Pottery: From Missions to Modernism" and make a pot to take home. From 11 a.m. to noon Wed., Oct. 29, it will be "Wednesday Western Adventures: Pumpkins, Pumpkins" in the McCormick Tribune Foundation Family Discovery Gallery. Celebrate Halloween in a Western way with Denise Fleming’s book "Pumpkin Eye." Come dressed for the occasion and "travel" through the galleries in a search for the Western costumes of the Old West. From 1 to 3:30 p.m. Sat., Nov. 1, the Mexican tradition of "Dia de los Muertos/Day of the Dead" will be explored. On this date families remember their dead and the continuity of life. Participants will make a paper flower or papel picado (paper cutting) and be part of the community altar to honor all those who have passed away.
