Sales tax revenue down slightly in Agoura Hills

Agoura Hills officials have released a list of the top sales-tax producing businesses in the city. As expected, hardware, furniture and groceries are among the leading big ticket items.

"We take a look at (the store) numbers on a regular basis," said Dave Adams, city manager. "If they do well, we do well."

The city receives 1 percent of the 8.25 percent tax levied on Los Angeles county retail sales.

Sales and use taxes generated just over $3 million for the Agoura Hills coffer during the last fiscal year, down from $3.2 million in 2001-2002.

"I think it’s just the economy," said Greg Ramirez, assistant city manger.

"Our economy out here has done better than most, but I think we may have lost a generator or two, a company moved out, but those things are hard to track."

The top 10 businesses represent 35 percent of the city’s total sales tax receipts.

Because of its Costco store, Westlake Village generates the most per capita sales tax in Conejo Valley/Las Virgenes. Calabasas is next followed by Thousand Oaks and Agoura Hills.
