Between drills and preparations for their participation in the San Diego Surf Cup Challenge last weekend, July 25 through 28, the Sting 90 girls soccer team from Dallas, Texas sewed handmade blankets and spent a day filling "My Stuff Bags" at the Dr. Laura Schlessinger Foundation and Volunteer Center in Westlake Village.

The entire team of 17 players spent a week before the tournament at the Hanks’ family residence in Westlake Village (daughter Alexis, 13, is a team member) with coaches Jamie and Shawn Cantrell training for their competition, plus sewing blankets to donate.

On Thurs., July 24 the girls spent the day putting those blankets and others that were donated into 2,010 My Stuff Bags at the volunteer center.

More than 300,000 children are rescued from abusive homes every year. Most of them are taken to crisis centers and foster homes with nothing but the clothes they are wearing. Dr. Schlessinger and her Foundation have created My Stuff Bags, which are filled with comforting items such as books, toys and toiletries as well as a blanket, to let these children know that in spite of the difficulties they are facing someone cares about them.

"This was a great opportunity for our girls to really have a hands-on experience helping others who are less fortunate. This was a project they could relate to, kids helping kids," said Leslie Doheny-Hanks, Alexis’s stepmother.
