We don’t need an upscale department store We don’t need an upscale department store Howard Littman is so right (Letters, The Acorn, July 10). What makes our city council think that our predominately middle-class community can support an upscale retail fashion store such as Neiman Marcus or Saks Fifth Avenue? Palos Verdes’ affluent community in South Bay tried Saks Fifth Avenue and several other large fashion stores and failed with all. When Neiman Marcus or Saks Fifth Avenue folds in Agoura Hills, who will most likely be our new tenant to step in and fill the vacated big box? Does Home Depot, Wal-Mart or Lowes come to mind? Isn’t that what this community already rejected when they passed Measure H? Contrary to Dan Selleck’s comment, this area does not have the "strong demographics" to support such a mall. This city cannot even support a fine dining restaurant. If the city council is depending on shoppers coming from our neighboring areas such as Malibu, San Fernando Valley, Conejo Valley or Ventura, then we will face a serious increase in traffic at already congested intersections on Kanan Road. This community needs to let themselves be heard as to what kind of stores they want to see developed. Do you want the Agoura City Council to make that decision for you? What happened to the "Village Walk" concept? Why not offer charming boutiques and unique gift shops? Why do we need another typical mall? The future of this community is at stake. It’s up to the people to retain the rural-like atmosphere which brought us here. Joan Yabitsu Agoura |
