Foundation makes grants

The Ventura County Community Foundation (VCCF) Women’s Legacy Fund has made selections for its 2003 Grant Cycle. On Thurs., Sept. 18, a reception will honor the seven grantees at Gardens of the World Community Park in Thousand Oaks.

Among the 2003 Women’s Legacy Fund grants recipients were:

•Many Mansions, for career and economic development programs offered at the Stoll Community House in Thousand Oaks, serving low-income single mothers and their children. These programs aim to break the cycle of poverty by assisting women in transitional housing with completing their GED, completing a career development course, gaining employment, saving a portion of their income and transitioning to permanent housing.

•Westminster Free Clinic, for the Professional Life Skills Training Pilot program, which will mentor low-income minority female volunteers (ages 18-22) at the clinic who are pursuing a college degree or advanced certification in the healthcare field and tran-sitioning into a career as a bilingual healthcare professional. Training will include applying for advanced education programs, budgeting for educational and living expenses, independent living skills, time management, seeking financial aid, study skills, networking, overcoming barriers and achieving goals. The Westminster Free Clinic serves East Ventura County.
