Art exhibit depicts many moods of Malibu’s landscape

The Frederick R. Weisman Museum of Art at Pepperdine University will present "On Location in Malibu 2003: Paintings by the California Art Club" from Sat., May 24 to Sun., Aug. 3 in the Gregg G. Juarez Gallery, West Gallery and Ron Wilson-Designer Gallery on the campus at 24255 Pacific Coast Hwy., Malibu.

Exhibition hours are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday to Sunday. Admission is free.

From 6 to 8 p.m. Sat., May 24, there will be a reception to meet the artists. The public is invited to attend.

The California Art Club was founded in 1909 and its early members included most of Southern California’s leading Impressionists such as Edgar Payne and William Wendt.

The club’s modern-day mission is to uphold the artistic standards and traditions of the club’s founders. Additionally, the artists play an important historical role by recording California’s natural landscape before it is further altered by urbanization.

The 64 paintings by 52 artists reveal a complex and varied topography, including not only Malibu’s shoreline but also streams and woods, canyons and mountains.
