Huntington Learning Center helps students improve

Founded in 1977, the Huntington Learning Center has offered supplemental education services longer than any other provider. Recently, a new center opened at 2820 Townsgate Road, Ste. 100, Westlake Village, in the Gelson’s Plaza. Their tutoring service offers parents credentialed teachers, years of experience in the field and customized instruction for their children.

Different children learn in very different ways. Parents need to feel comfortable that the tutoring approach will match their child’s learning style, as well as feel confident that the curriculum and instructional methods complement and support what is expected in the classroom.

With an eye on second quarter report cards, concerns over tough new standards and less than perfect grades may cause some parents to look outside of the regular classroom for extra tutoring and testing.

What should parents do when mid-year report cards don’t measure up? Step one is to examine the situation realistically to pinpoint the problem. Is it study skills or is there a behavioral concern? Does the student have the basic skills necessary to succeed in the class? Step two is to talk with the child. Why does he think he got poor grades? It’s important that the child knows that his parents take the situation seriously.

Parents are encouraged to talk with the child’s teachers, counselors and a tutoring service provider such as Huntington.

The center advises parents to develop a plan together to not only achieve better grades but also to let the child know that he has a lot of support and that his parents believe in his abilities.

"This is one of the most critical times of the year for addressing academic issues," said Jim Holmes, director of the new center.
