NIMBYist and proud of it NIMBYist and proud of it I was quite surprised by the editor’s condescending tone towards the NIMBYist (Not In My Back Yard), as he calls them. You suggested we move to the desert if we don’t like to live in congestion. I would like to turn this argument around and suggest to those who feel a need to be within walking distance of "everything" to consider moving to the Valley or other areas that offer such conveniences. I would also like to remind you that most of us moved to this area to get away from congestion and to enjoy the open space feeling that this area provides us. If a bigger priority was easy access to businesses or any other development, we would probably not have been here to begin with. Much to your disappointment, I will continue to be a NIMBY and fight to prolong the life of every blade of grass in this area. Any development that can find a home elsewhere I will consider a success, and any development that can be delayed for as long as possible will also be a success. You and your developer friends will probably win eventually and succeed in turning more grass into cement. There is too much money behind what you probably call "progress." I see the smiling faces of our city council members on the cover of The Acorn with shovels in their hands, breaking ground for a new development, often the same people that had their picture next to an oak tree or an open field during the campaign for office. When you all succeed, I will probably take your advice and move to an area that looks more like Agoura Hills did 10 or 20 years ago and hope that other NIMBYists like me will live there too.
