Deerhill Park wrong spot for Boys, Girls Club There might be better locations in Oak Park for a Boys and Girls Club than Mae Boyar Park, but Deerhill Park is not it (Bonnie Biddison’s letter in the Jan. 23 Acorn). At Mae Boyar Park, the facility could be built without eliminating any recreational facilities. The existing building (now well over 30 years old) would be replaced not removed. Parking would be expanded. And a driveway would be added on Kanan Road to remove some of the current traffic from Conifer Street. At Deerhill Park, the only way a facility could be built would be to eliminate either the soccer field or the softball diamond (or both). Or is that the intent of those who support this suggestion? After all, before that park was developed, several nearby residents strongly fought against ballfields. They did not want "that kind of people" on their streets. The ballfields were built anyway because "that kind of people" lived in Oak Park long before the complainers. David E. Ross Oak Park |
