Persian music concert set

Persian music will be featured in performances by Axiom of Choice during the World Festival of Sacred Music at 8 p.m. Thurs. and Fri., Sept. 26 and 27, at the Skirball Cultural Center, 2701 N. Sepulveda Blvd., Los Angeles. Described as "poignant, innovative, and soulful," the ensemble has set out to define a new sound within the context of Persian music. Interweaving quarter-tone guitar, saz, diwan (Middle Eastern lutes), Persian vocals, the Armenian duduk, clarinet and global percussion instruments, their sound is "both traditionally Persian and globally modern."

Their performances will feature music from their recording, "Unfolding," which "embraces the mystical poetry and spirit" of the astronomer and mathematician Omar Khayyam.

The original compositions are mostly based on Persian melodies and modes "that have universal appeal because of their cohesive, seamless and natural fusion" with other styles of music. The musicians work within a compositional structure in which both improvisation and personal expression mingle freely. A goal of the group is to make Persian music more accessible to a broader audience.

Tickets ranging from $15 to $21 are available by calling (323) 655-8587.
