Utility tax a waste of money

Utility tax a waste of money

But of course the Calabasas City Council voted to delay the initiative to repeal the utility tax to the March city ballot, which normally gets only a 20 percent turnout.

They want to keep the comfortable cushion in income that the tax gives them.

The utility tax has been a bonanza for them—just check what your electric, water and gas bills have risen to since incorporation in 1991. If the city council were to act responsibly, they would reduce the 5 percent to 2 percent and still receive more than they did in 1991.

If they did that, the initiative would likely fail.

And so would the council’s propensity to create more parks, of which we already have too many—they’re never half filled.

But we could use some more tennis courts. For example, our Calabasas Tennis Club has a waiting list of over two years.
