Resident named ASCE VP

Norm BuehringNorm Buehring

Calabasas resident Norm Buehring has been elected vice president of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE).

Buehring, a former professional engineer who’s the director of resource conservation and public outreach for Las Virgenes Municipal Water District, will be installed Nov. 6 during ASCE’s annual business meeting in Washington, D.C. The term is for two years.

"I’ve been active in my professional society for all of my adult life," Buehring said. "I chose civil engineering and have really been happy with that choice."

Buehring served as president of the ASCE Los Angeles chapter in 1996 and was one of the organization’s national directors from 1997 to 2000. He also chaired the ASCE National Technical Activities Committee

"It’s a major leadership and management challenge," Buehring said. "It’s like being on the board of directors for a pretty fair sized organization."

Buehring spent 32 years with the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power before retiring as assistant chief engineer for water in 1997. He joined Las Virgenes water district that same year.

Buehring and his wife Joan are active members of the Calabasas community where they’ve lived for the past 25 years. They were named 2002’s "Citizens of the Year" by the Las Virgenes Homeowners’ Federation and recently inscribed their names on the Calabasas "Wall of Honor."

Buehring earned a bachelor of science degree in civil engineering from California State University Long Beach and masters’ degrees in civil engineering and public administration from the University of Southern California.

Founded in 1852, ASCE represents 130,000 civil engineers worldwide and is America’s oldest national engineering society. It’s celebrating its 150th anniversary.
