Benedectine monks to host fall festival

The Benedictine monks of St. Andrew’s Abbey will open their 800-acre monastery ranch grounds in the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains in the hamlet of Valyermo near Pearblossom to the public for their 45th annual Fall Festival from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Sat. and Sun., Sept. 28 and 29.

Among the highlights will be country music with costumed dancers, arts and crafts demonstrations, a vesper dance celebration in which the monks participate, new and used books stalls, two "huge" flea markets, two juried art exhibits, boutiques, upper midway gift stalls and a ceramic display of more than 1,500 items created by artist Father Maur.

For children, a mini-farm with pony rides and "pettable" farm animals will be available.

A group called "Nuns for Fun" will present their comedic song and dance act inspired by the film "Sister Act."

In addition to the many family festivities planned, Masses will be offered at 9 and 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Saturday, with Vigil Masses at 5 and 6 p.m. Saturday, and Sunday masses will be offered at 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11 a.m. and at noon, 1 and 5 p.m.

The fall festival benefits the ministries of St. Andrew’s Abbey.

Admission is free with a $4 parking fee.
