Cantor brings touch of swing to service

Broadway actor and Grammy-nominated composer, Hazzan Mike Stein, cantor at Temple Aliyah, has composed a Shabbat service, "Shabbat in Swing Time—A Jazz Service," to be premiered at 8:15 p.m. on Fri., June 14 at the temple, 6025 Valley Circle Blvd., Woodland Hills.

"Shabbat in Swing Time" features samba, bossanova and swing. A five piece jazz combo will accompany Stein, who will also perform on jazz violin.

His playing may be heard on recordings by country star Mary-Chapin Carpenter among others.

Stein, who starred in three Broadway shows as a teen, played in the U.S. Navy Band for 17 years.

He has written several children’s albums, one of which was nominated for a Grammy in 1999.
