Protest against New Millennium is too late Protest against New Millennium is too late We wish them luck, but the folks in Calabasas who are complaining about the New Millennium Homes housing development (The Oaks) are probably wasting their time, unless they’re seeking more mitigation. Developments that were approved more than a decade ago aren’t likely to be reversed after construction starts. The developer won’t pack up his bags and leave town, and he won’t throw money away to start from scratch somewhere else. And neither would you, if you were in his shoes. Los Angeles County approved the project before Calabasas became a city and blaming incumbent or former councilmembers isn’t going to solve anything, either. Part of the reason Calabasas became a city was to control or prevent projects like these. But The Oaks was (for all intents and purposes) a done deal 11 years ago. If you want to blame somebody, write letters or call L.A. County officials. Better yet, call the ones who represented this area 11 years ago. We’ve heard similar horror stories before—about homeowners who were told that nearby open space was a "future park;" that nobody could build there because it was "geologically unstable;" or that the property had been donated as permanent open space by a "benevolent billionaire." Right or wrong, the New Millennium Homes project isn’t going away. Editorials RSS feed |
