Council should accept the will of the electorate

I feel that I must respond to the brief comment made by City Councilman/Mayor Denis Weber in regard to the passage of Measure H. Mr. Weber was quoted as stating, "To say I’m disappointed is an understatement. We’re just going to have to huddle and say what’s our next step on this."

To say that I’m disappointed by Mr. Weber’s comment is an understatement as well. Instead of congratulating his constituency on their turnout numbers, he chooses to react negatively. Instead of accepting defeat graciously and respecting the will of the majority of voters, he apparently is ready to drag this issue out even longer.

I also take exception to the use of the word "huddle." This connotes collusion and exclusion—collusion among the powers that be and exclusion of all interested parties—which includes every citizen of our wonderful city. As it stands now, I believe the city council should avoid any "huddling" activity since many in your citizenry already feel wary about whose interests are truly being represented.

In conclusion, the victory of Measure H is a small one in comparison to the victory of the democratic process evidenced by the outstanding voter turnout on March 5. Mr. Weber, it would behoove you to remember that it’s this same process, and many of the same voters who ushered in your last electoral victory.

The people have spoken—be proud of them and accept their decision. Thank you for your attention.
