Women to host Hugh O’Brian

Actor Hugh O’Brian will be guest speaker at the Westlake Women’s Club luncheon meeting beginning 10 a.m. on Tues., March 12 at the Westlake Inn, 32001 Agoura Road, Westlake Village. The luncheon is at noon.

Perhaps best known for his leading role in the 1950s television western, "Wyatt Earp," O’Brian is president, CEO and founder of Hugh O’Brian’s Youth Leadership (HOBY), a program whose goal is to seek out, recognize and develop leadership potential in high school sophomores. Students selected to attend the leadership development seminars get a realistic look at what makes America’s incentive system work.

"Its format is simple: bring a select group of school sophomores with demonstrated leadership abilities together with a group of distinguished leaders in business, education, government and the professions, and let the two interact," according to the women’s club.

In 2001, the Westlake Women’s Club was recognized by the California Federated Women’s Club for supporting the most HOBY students.

At the March 12 luncheon O’Brian will interact with the five local HOBY students the club supported last year, including Chelsea Rundle of Westlake, Brooke Hawkins of Agoura, Lilian Doan of Thousand Oaks and Sara Kathleen Campbell of Newbury Park high school.

Schools receive the HOBY nomination materials by the end of September and all 10th graders are eligible to apply for the four-day educational seminars at no cost to the student, school or parents. Volunteers coordinate the program and service organizations support chosen students.

Presidents of the 17 clubs in the Sierra Cahuenga District have been invited to attend the luncheon. Guests are welcome. The cost is $18. For details, please call (805) 496-9911 or (805) 375-0325.
