MICHAEL COONS/The Acorn GOOD JOB-Los Angeles County firefighter Tim Bernstein, center, receives well-earned recognition. He rescued Lucy, an 11-year-old golden retriever, from a burning vehicle in which the dog and Kelly, left, and Kim, right, were traveling in (last December). For his heroics, New Leash on Life, a nonprofit organization, recognized Bernstein and the rest of Fire Station 65 in a ceremony last week. Bernstein suffered severe facial lacerations because Lucy, in a panic, bit him while he tried to pull her away from the deadly flames that burned in the vehicle. More...

LISA ADAMS/The Acorn SO LOVING-This is Joe. He's a 6-year-old yellow shepherd/Siberian husky mix and he's ready to be adopted from the Agoura Animal Shelter at 29525 Agoura Road. Joe is neutered, housebroken, gentle and rides well in the car. His ID No. is A0963944. For details, please call (818) 991-0071. Pets occasionally are already adopted, so it's smart to call first. But keep in mind, too, that sometimes the adoption doesn't work out and a pet might be returned. It's not a good idea to give a pet as a gift unless you've cleared it with the recipient, whether it's one person or a family. And please don't contribute to pet overpopulation; please get your animal neutered ASAP. More...
