Showcase of performing artists available to schools
      The Ventura County Superintendent of Schools will present its annual showcase of performing artists from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Mon., June 4 in the Scherr Forum Theatre at the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza. The showcase is an opportunity for schools, both public and private, to preview artists who will be available to perform at schools in the 2001-02 school year. Performing groups in dance, music, theater, puppetry and storytelling will share excerpts from their full-length programs. In addition, participants will learn about many of the programs offered in the visual and performing arts including Artist-In-The-Classroom, Adventures in the Performing Arts, Teacher Training in the Arts and nationally known touring performers available to schools in the coming year.

State University committee develops new approaches on how to cope with campus drinking
      The California State University (CSU) Alcohol Policies and Prevention Programs Committee, formed in December after the alcohol-related death of a CSU student and two alcohol poisoning incidents, recommended to the CSU Board of Trustees a comprehensive approach that includes consistent enforcement of policies, education on alcohol issues, intervention and treatment, a limit on alcohol vendor advertising, and $1.1 million to fund these efforts.

High school students can take computer training this summer
      New Horizons Computer Learning Centers, noted for providing computer training to their corporate clients worldwide, will be offering junior and senior high school students a summer program "that focuses on entry level skills in administration and information technology," according to Ken Horton, director of business development for the New Horizons location in Westlake Village. The experimental summer program will accommodate up to 15 students.

Oak Park resident graduates with honors from USC
      Kara Lemma, daughter of Edward and Kathleen Lemma of Oak Park, recently graduated with honors in sociology and religion from the University of Southern California. Kara was also awarded the Extraordinary Community Service Award from USC and a $1,000 gift sponsored by the college and the estate of Grace Ford Salvatori.
