Viewpoint student wins martial arts award

Senior Ken Roy, 18, of Viewpoint School in Calabasas recently received a first-place award in film and video production along with a $3,000 check in the final phase of the Arts Recognition and Talent Search Program held in Miami, Fla., last month.

Roy, of Woodland Hills, was invited by the National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts to join 124 other 17- and 18-year-olds across the country at the ARTS Week 2001 competition, which drew 7,500 applicants seeking awards.

He was among only five other student filmmakers nationally and a total of 12 artists from California to be invited to attend the event.

Roy has created seven animated films in his four years at Viewpoint. He hopes to pursue character animation studies at Cal Arts next fall. He’s also a National Merit Scholarship semifinalist and plays on Viewpoint’s varsity basketball and volleyball teams.
