New Year attracts crowds to get fit
Acorn Staff Writer
In January when the big ball drops and the New Year is celebrated, people all over the world find things they want to accomplish for the next 365 days. New Year’s resolutions often include getting fit or losing weight. Some people start getting in shape after the first of January and continue throughout the year as they planned, although most end up quitting or burning out. "Everyone has a New Year’s resolution to get in shape," said ex-owner of a gym and tanning salon in Northern California, John Deering. "In March, it’s back to the old faithfuls." Cliff Webb of the Agoura Hills Spectrum Club fitness center explained that an increase during January always occurs, but not necessarily just in new members. "Usage and frequency increases with members that haven’t been going," said Webb. Many gyms like 24-Hour Fitness offer specials for those making New Year’s resolutions. For Costco wholesale employees, a posting on the wall near their lunchroom advertises adjusted fees for joining a gym. "We don’t lower dues," said Webb. All members should pay the same and be treated the same, he said. While places like 24-Hour Fitness get packed with members, Webb believes a nicer and a more relaxed facility can justify its higher fees. Webb declined to reveal the exact membership increase, but he added that attendance definitely jumps geometrically this time of year. "In January and February, member attendance doubles," said Deering of Northern California. "Seventy percent are new to the gym." Whether it’s your goal to get fit for two months or the whole year, gyms will be more active. Look for discount offers and busier gyms. And some health stores are offering specials on supplements and vitamins. |
