Westlake stays hot
having a seat the hard way-Westlake's No. 3, senior wide receiver and linebacker John White, hits the turf during Friday night's game with Woodbridge. Westlake prevailed again, 26-14.
Westlake proved it has depth at the quarterback position in its 26-14 win over Woodbridge last Friday night, but it was the running of Jon Contos, one of Westlake’s biggest surprises this year, that made the difference.
In the second game of this football season Westlake’s starting senior Cory Miles was injured, breaking an ankle at Clovis West.
Junior transfer from Thousand Oaks High, Todd Feiereisen filled in admirably to lead the Warriors until he too was injured, with what was reported to be a separated shoulder.
Junior Kent Sowell took over the reigns for Westlake, which took a 7-0 first-quarter lead on a 44-yard run by Contos, a junior running back.
Contos would run for 214 yards on 16 carries on the day, this despite missing nearly a quarter of play due to an asthma attack.
After two Woodbridge scores made it 14-7 with Woodbridge on top, Contos struck again, this time from 42-yards, but a missed extra point kept the Warriors a point behind, 14-13.
Kasey O’Brien, also a junior running back, scored twice, however, first on a 10-yard third quarter run, then on a 47-yard fourth-quarter run, and Westlake held Woodbridge scoreless in the second half.
O’Brien ran for 132 yards in the game for the Warriors, who ran for 318 yards as a team.
Sowell completed 10-25 passes for 132 yards with two interceptions in the first half. He also threw two touchdowns that were called back due to penalties.
