Everyone has the right to discuss the issue of abortion

This letter is in response to Randall Rasson’s letter (Oct. 19 issue) stating that he would consider Cardinal Mahony’s views on abortion only after he (the Cardinal) had experienced an unwanted pregnancy.

This statement suggests that no person should have an opinion on abortion without having conceived an unwanted child. This would dismiss the opinions of women who have conceived planned pregnancies, women unable to conceive and all men, including Mr. Rasson, because of their inability to get pregnant.

Religious leaders have an obligation to speak out on issues of morality. To disagree with the Cardinal’s opinion is fine.

To suggest that he shouldn’t have one is just plain ignorant.
