Calabasas shuttle may get $500,000 in funds

The Calabasas Smart Shuttle Program is in line to receive $500,000 in federal funds to enhance the current transit system within the city of Calabasas.

Sponsored by U.S. Rep. Brad Sherman (D-Woodland Hills), the transportation bill has passed the House of Representatives and U.S. Senate and will go before President Bill Clinton for his signature.

"These federal funds will help Calabasas expand its bus service by adding natural gas fueled buses to the existing fleet, new bus stops …[to] expand services to and from Calabasas," said Sherman.

Devised by Robert Yalda, director of transportation/intergovernmental relations for the city of Calabasas, the Smart Shuttle Program’s objectives include enhancing connectivity within the city and to specific attractions (such as the Agoura Hills/Calabasas Community Center and Old Town Calabasas) and developing a shuttle bus plan showing routes, stops, and operational standards and features.

"Without the help and determination of Congressman Sherman and his staff, this project would not have been possible," Yalda said.

"I am looking forward to implementing this creative means of public transit expansion in Calabasas."
