Lights out for Calabasas

The St. Bonaventure football team set a Ventura County high school record for most consecutive victories when it defeated host Calabasas last week, 46-7.

Heralded running back Lorenzo Booker led St. Bonaventure to its 20th straight win by scoring five touchdowns and gaining 285 yards in 17 carries.

It was a strange Friday the 13th, or maybe what you’d might expect on a night that also had a full moon.

With 4:48 remaining in the first half, the lights at the Calabasas field went out and caused a lengthy delay in the action.

There was no score when the stadium went dark, so for the first seven minutes and 12 seconds, at least, the Coyotes stayed even with the Seraphs.

When the power came back on about an hour later, St. Bonaventure (6-0) had little trouble finding its way to the end zone.

Whitney Lewis scored with 3:12 left in the first quarter on a 42-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Jack Swisher.

Booker’s first TD, a 42-yard run with eight seconds left in the opening period, gave St. Bonnie a 14-0 lead.

A 46-yard Booker TD early in the second quarter increased the lead to 20-0, but Calabasas looked to make it interesting when it scored on a 57-yard pass from Justin Fenchel to Andre Woodert.

The Seraphs held a 26-7 lead when Swisher later connected with Lewis on a 25-yard scoring pass.

The third quarter belonged to Booker who scored on TD runs of four, 14, and 46 yards.

St. Bonaventure amassed 545 total yards, while Calabasas (2-4) managed only 141 yards.

Fenchel carried 19 times for 48 yards and was sacked 10 times.
