CHRIS BARNETT/The AcornHANDS UP - Wide receiver Dave Anderson of Thousand Oaks goes up for a pass against the Westlake Warriors. Anderson leads the CIF Southern Section with 35 receptions, but T.O. lost, 49-0.
The Westlake football team defeated Thousand Oaks last Thursday, 49-0, in the Marmonte League opening game for both teams.
Westlake (3-1, 1-0) scored 28 unanswered first-half points, including a touchdown which came on a third down and 52 yards to go.
The 87-yard scoring play from Westlake junior quarterback Todd Feiereisen to senior wide receiver Ryan Foltz was indicative of the night it was for T.O.
Foltz’ TD came early in the second quarter after Feiereisen (7 of 18, 219 yards, two TDs and one interception) hit wide receiver John White from 10-yards out with 2:57 left in the first quarter.
The Warriors tacked on two more scores after the long third- down conversion before halftime.
Junior running back Kasey O’Brien (10 carries for 81 yards) took one home from three yards with 3:59 left in the second quarter and junior running back Jon Contos (11 rushes for 138 yards) scored from nine-yards with 28 seconds left before intermission.
Thousand Oaks (0-4, 0-1), which will travel to play at Moorpark (1-3, 0-1) tomorrow night at 7 p.m., failed to get on the scoreboard against Westlake despite the effort of junior quarterback Ben Olson who hit on 17 of 33 passes, but only for 70 yards.
T.O.’s junior wide receiver Dave Anderson had eight receptions on the night, but was held to just 26 yards on those catches.
Foltz had 163 yards in receiving yardage on four catches for the Warriors, who host Simi Valley (0-4, 0-0) tomorrow night.
In the second half, Contos (on an 83-yard run) and O’Brien (on a 44-yard run) scored their second TDs each, and senior runner Jon Lakatos, who ran for 81 yards on three carries for the game, scored on a 70-yard run.
After the loss, Thousand Oaks’ first-year coach Mike Sanders guaranteed that his Lancer football team wouldn’t dwell on any of his team’s first four defeats.
"We’ve played two CIF champions (the Warriors and Hart), two quarterfinalists (Crescenta Valley and Camarillo) and four league champions," Sanders said. "Westlake’s a good football team and that was an old-fashioned butt whooping. But we’re not quitting. Nobody’s quitting.
"As far as I’m concerned, we’re 0-1 in league and we’re going to Moorpark next week (Friday). ‘‘We’ve got to get after it," Sanders added, "and we do have the kids that can go and win out the rest of the league. There’s no doubt about it."
Westlake senior offensive lineman Mark Manning said the Warriors’ play so far this season has exceeded what he’d envisioned.
"I knew we’d be good, I just didn’t think we’d start off this fast. Who could ask for a better bunch of guys?" Manning asked.
Said Lakatos: "Our offensive line blocked well, we had a great week in practice. Back-to-back championships—we’ve got to keep it up."
