Free all-day jazz concert set

A free jazz festival, "Jazz Day L.A.!" will be 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sat., Oct. 7 at the Performing Arts Center of Los Angeles County at First and Hill streets in downtown Los Angeles.

Among the jazz artists to be featured are the Bill Cunliffe Sextet, the Charlie Shoemake Trio and Francisco Aquabella’s Latin Jazz Band.

The event will also include two special jazz master classes: at 10 a.m. with jazz pianist Shelly Berg and at 12:30 p.m. with saxophonist Ernie Watts; at 2 p.m. these musicians will conduct a jazz jam session. Classes are in the Grand Hall (second floor) of the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion.

At 3:30 p.m. the Patrick Williams Big Band with guests Eddie Daniels (clarinet soloist) and Bill Watrous (trombonist) will perform at the Colburn School of Performing Arts, two blocks south of the Center at 200 S. Grand; reservations are required for this free concert by calling (213) 621-2314.

Free parking is available in the underground garage for cars entering before noon.
