Rubbish removed Coastal Cleanup Day called major success Rubbish removed Coastal Cleanup Day called major success Some 8,500 volunteers participated in the 16th annual California Coastal Cleanup Day on Sept. 16, working at more than 50 cleanup locations from Malibu to Long Beach. They collected 59,000 lbs. of trash and 4,500 lbs. of recyclables. Sites included beaches, Catalina Island, two Los Angeles River sites, four Ballona Creek sites, five inland sites including Medea Creek in Agoura and Malibu Creek State Park in Calabasas, a kayak site and a dive site. Volunteers braved high heat and muck at Malibu Creek State Park in Calabasas to hoist six cars from Las Virgenes Creek — including several 1940s era Ford Fairlanes. Los Angeles County coordinator for the event was once again Heal the Bay, a nonprofit environmental group dedicated to making Santa Monica Bay and Southern California coastal waters safe and healthy for people and marine life. |
