Calabasas citizens invited to participate in creek cleanup Calabasas citizens, businesses and families are invited to help the city of Calabasas celebrate environmental spirit during an annual Creek Cleanup from 10 a.m. to noon on Sat., Oct. 7. Participants need to wear protective clothing and foot gear; those under 18 will need to be accompanied by an adult. Participants will learn what they can do to prevent pollution in local creeks. Through pollution prevention activities (like this event), the city seeks to find a healthy balance between building the community and maintaining a clean and safe environment for the future. Participants should enroll at 10 a.m. at De Anza Park and to receive safety information and assignments. For more information, call (818) 878-4242, ext. 293. Other events the city has planned for the same weekend are: Free curbside bulky item pick up (Calabasas residents only) by appointment only on Sat., Oct. 7; residents should call their local trash hauler for appointment, either G.I. Rubbish at (818) 782-2473 or Las Virgenes Disposal at (818) 889-9400. No hazardous materials will be picked up. However, a free household hazardous waste (HHW) roundup will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sun., Oct. 8 at the Calabasas Landfill, 5300 Lost Hills Road. HHW includes such items as: leftover motor oil and anti-freeze, acid and lye-based cleaners, old paint and solvents, car batteries, pesticides and garden herbicides. There’s a general limit of 15 gallons or 125 lbs. of HHW per vehicle. Not accepted: explosives, ammunition, radioactive materials or waste from businesses. Residents are asked to place items in a sturdy box, preferably in their original, labeled containers. Residents are advised to make reservations by calling the Los Angeles County Department of Public works at (888) 253-2652. |
