Joggers: Please remember to stay out of roadway bicycle lanes

Joggers: Please remember to stay out of roadway bicycle lanes

I’m writing in response to the June 15 letter by Robert Brady regarding bike and pedestrian safety. In his letter Mr. Brady states that he was hit by a car while jogging in the bike lane on Lindero Canyon Road.

Mr. Brady: Why were you running in the bike lane in the first place? The length of Lindero Canyon has either a sidewalk or parkway running along it.

According to the DMV Driver’s Handbook, it is illegal for a pedestrian to occupy a bike lane when a sidewalk is present.

As a bike rider in Westlake Village I have frequently been forced into the traffic lane by joggers, walkers and mothers with strollers walking two abreast, etc., who refuse to use the sidewalk when available.

In communities surrounding Westlake Village are signs posted stating "Pedestrians Use Sidewalk."

I suggest that the city of Westlake Village invest in some of these signs before there is another car vs. bike accident.

The city could very well find [itself] being sued for failure to enforce the law regarding bike lane usage in their city.
