Pledge of Allegiance deserves changes

Which fondly held myths inspire us, and which ones keep us from reality, so that we make wrong decisions and do wrong things (like Vietnam)?

In other words, shortly before I left high school I began stopping at "and to the republic for which it stands" during the daily morning Pledge of Allegiance. This was because I had come to the simple realization that the statement is not only untrue, but arrogant.

And that was long ago.

Does anyone really believe this fractious, discordant, so-called "multicultural" nation is "indivisible"? And especially, does anyone living in this country in these times really believe there is liberty and justice for all those who can’t pay for it? I am not just talking about racial and ethnic minorities, either.

As for God: I believe in Psalm 24. Therefore, to me it follows that the idea of only one nation being under God is pretty arrogant. There is a difference between just being under God and putting oneself under God.

Isn’t it ironic that it takes an atheist to point out that the Empire has no clothes. Go, Mike Newdow. Hang in there and don’t give up!
